In Canada, veterinary health products (VHPs) refer to a range of low risk drugs in dosage form that are used to maintain or promote the health and welfare of companion and food-producing animals. They are not used to treat, prevent or cure disease.
Veterinary health products (VHPs) encompass a wide range of substances and products intended for use in animals to maintain or improve their health.
VHP’s contain ingredients such as:
VHP’s are regulated by the Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD) of Health Canada, under the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations.
VDD oversees the importation and sale of VHPs through their VHP Notification Program.
VHPs are subject to regulatory oversight to ensure their safety, efficacy, and quality. Health Canada evaluates and authorizes these products before they can be marketed and sold.
While many VHP’s are available over the counter, or at your local pet store, we strongly encourage all pet owners to discuss VHPs with their veterinarian, prior to purchasing and administering these products.
Your vet will be able to help you identify the appropriate products and correct dosages for your furry family members.
